Independent Catholic and Liberal Catholic Church – FAQ

Updated: 5 days ago

Many people ask me what kind of church I belong to, especially when they learn I’m a Catholic priest who also offers healing work like Reiki and grief recovery classes. I always welcome the questions. This post helps explain what Independent Catholic and Liberal Catholic mean—and what kind of church I serve.

What is the Independent Catholic Church?

Independent Catholic churches are part of the Catholic tradition but are not under the Pope. We celebrate the sacraments, follow the teachings of Christ, and keep apostolic succession, while remaining self-governing and open to all people.

What is the Liberal Catholic Church?

The Liberal Catholic Church brings together the beauty of the sacraments with a more open, thoughtful approach. We respect tradition while allowing freedom of belief. Each person is invited to walk their own spiritual path with support and kindness.

Are you still Catholic?

Yes. Our priests and bishops are validly ordained in apostolic succession, meaning our lines trace back to the early church. We are Catholic in practice, belief, and spirit—just not Roman Catholic.

What’s different from the Roman Catholic Church?

We welcome everyone. That includes LGBTQ+ people, divorced individuals, those who’ve felt pushed away, or anyone simply seeking a home. We don’t ask you to check a list of beliefs. We simply welcome you to the table.

Do you celebrate Mass?

Yes, we celebrate a full Mass with the Eucharist. Sometimes our worship is very traditional, sometimes it’s more simple and quiet. What matters most is the spirit behind it—love, presence, and reverence.

Are you part of a new religion?

No. Independent Catholicism and the Liberal Catholic Church have been around for over a century. We are rooted in the same ancient Christian tradition, just walking a path of openness and service outside of Rome.

Can I receive communion in your church?

Yes. We practice open communion. You don’t have to be a member or meet any conditions. If you come with an open heart, the table is open to you.

Do you follow a specific creed or dogma?

We affirm the essentials of the Christian faith, but we also allow space for questions and differences. Faith is personal, and we honor that.

Why does your ministry include things like Reiki, grief work, or yoga?

Because healing is part of the Gospel. We care for the whole person—body, mind, and soul. Whether through prayer, gentle listening, or peaceful practices, we aim to bring comfort, strength, and light wherever it’s needed.

You are welcome here.

Whether you’ve been away from church for years or are just beginning to ask deeper questions—there is space for you here. No pressure. No judgment. Just a quiet place to reconnect.
