Love one another

Love One Another – A Gospel Reflection for May 18, 2025

John 13:31–35

It’s the night of the Last Supper. Jesus knows His time is short. He doesn’t preach a long sermon. He doesn’t list rules or requirements. He simply leans in, looks at His disciples, and says:

“I give you a new commandment: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.”

Not a suggestion. Not a wish. A commandment.

And not just any kind of love.

Not “be nice when it’s easy” love.

Not “help others when you have time” love.

But “As I have loved you”—love that washes feet, that shares bread, that forgives betrayal, that lays down its life.

Jesus is telling us: this is how the world will recognize you. Not by how you dress. Not by what church you go to. Not by how well you quote Scripture.

But by your love.

This commandment calls us to a sacramental life. Love is not just felt—it’s embodied. It shows up in our patience, our service, and the way we carry the presence of Christ into everyday moments.

And yet, love isn’t something we perform—it’s something we remember. Christ is already within us. The work of prayer, of silence, of opening our hearts—this is how we awaken to His presence. Every moment we choose compassion over control, forgiveness over judgment, or tenderness over pride, we are choosing to love as He loved.

This week, when challenges arise, try whispering:

“Christ, love through me.”

Let love be your first response—not your last resort. In doing so, you are not only obeying a command—you are becoming a living vessel of Divine Love.
